I just got off the phone with David Perry, author of the must-have best seller  Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters.  David is one of the most passionate job search advocates that I know.  I love talking with him.  We even did an Ask The Expert together (click here to find it). He told me the DVD he made, that he used to sell for $50, is now available for a free download.  I havent done it yet but I have no problem recommending anything from David.  Just go to PutAmericaBackToWork.com, fill in the small form on the right, and he said you will get a link to download the content.  He said it is big (they had to put it on a DVD), but knowing his stuff, and his passion, I would say it is worth it. Women CAN Excel in Traditionally Male-Dominated Roles College is getting astronomically expensive and, after graduation, millennials are struggling under a mountain of school debt averaging $37,000 per person. In many cases, this puts college out of reach for some students. Experts are suggesting an alternative: trades. Generally, trade schools are much less expensive than college. You can train or apprentice for as little as six months before becoming licensed and going out on your own. Once you do get certified, you have the option of going into business yourself or getting a job in your trade industry. Sometimes a potential employer will even pay for your training and licensing, sweetening the deal even further. With this in mind, more women these days are diving into careers that have historically been male dominated.    A trade career offers a high salary and skill sets which help in other areas of life. Many of the skills you learn can translate to other industries, making you a more valuable commodity. The Future is Trade Careers The high cost of education combined with fewer office jobs makes a career in trades very attractive. The plumbing industry is expected to grow by 16 percent, with over 75,800 new jobs added to the industry next year. There are a ton of opportunities just waiting for young people with the desire and skill. Plumbing is one area that has yet to be replaced by technology, so it is a safe bet for a long-term future of growth and steady income. Although you are required to apprentice before operating on your own, and you need training and licensing, it’s a great job. The average salary for a plumber is $51,000 and higher. Women in The Trades What Are The Benefits? Although women are showing up in many trade industries that they weren’t before, most homeowners would still be surprised to see a woman show up to do repairs. Mr. Rooter Plumbing claims that women plumbers put homeowners at ease. Customers find women easier to converse with and more honest about the work with less pressure to make unneeded repairs. The education process for becoming a plumber is pretty quick in most states and will only require some training and an apprenticeship. After that, you become licensed and are ready to go. Many employers offer very flexible schedules, and you can make an excellent salary with unlimited earning potential. A trade is something you can bank on. When you have a marketable skill like plumbing, you will always have work, regardless if you work for yourself or a company. Living the Dream Be Your Own Boss The number of female entrepreneurs is multiplying, twice as fast as males. The benefits of taking your trade certification and going out on your own are unbeatable. You control your salary and don’t have a boss looking over your shoulder. When working for yourself, you can often make your own hours and operate on a schedule that works around your life and family. You can also control how slow or fast you grow your business and when to add new employees. Many tailored just for those of you who want to open up your own plumbing business. These resources cover everything from financing, mentoring, networking and support to get you started being an entrepreneur. Shared on the DOL website, a woman, Deawendoe “Dee” St. Martin contacted the Oregon Tradeswomen Inc. about their 7-week long, state-certified pre-apprenticeship training program. She wanted a career that would support her and her four children. Ms. St. Martin worked hard, passed and went onto the apprentice program, which she also passed with flying colors. She now works for a local excavating company in the career of her choice, making a good living for herself and her family. Her story is just one of many successes. About 100 women enroll in the program a year. All these women lack is training and skills. Once they have that, they have a career for life. A career in plumbing may not be your first thought out of high school, but it might be a great way to make good money, keep your own hours, and find perfect balance between work and family life. False Guarantees Job seekers beware! If you are seeking professional resume writing assistance, do not be fooled by the fancy wording or the false promises on a website â€" especially if it claims: “We Guarantee Jobs (WHOA!) or even We Guarantee Interviews” (Hmm). Why are these guarantees too good to be true? It is simple, with so many variables involved in securing a new role  (which every savvy job seeker should be aware of) guaranteeing jobs is practically impossible and guaranteeing interviews requires a lot more investment than a good resume (i.e.: job search support). Reputable resume writing or career services organizations do not  offer these types of guarantees.  That’s right…they know that a good resume is just one factor in a job search. Claiming that a resume creation can guarantee you an interview (or a job!) may be nothing more than an unethical trick to sucker you in and secure your sale. Can you really trust that an organization has your best interests at heart when they are primarily focused on increasing sales? How Comparing Yourself To Others Can Turn Self-Destructive Part of Kathy Caprinos series “Braving Up To Build Your Happiest Life   I know a lot about comparing ourselves to others and what that does to us â€" both the positive and the negative effects because I’ve engaged in comparison more times than I can count.  In my therapy training, I learned to expand my awareness of my thoughts and feelings, and through that process, I saw much more clearly when and how comparison has enlivened me, and also where it’s made me feel awful jealous, resentful, and “less than.” Now, working with professional women to build happier, more rewarding lives and careers, I’m seeing even more clearly how the act of comparing ourselves to others can be motivating, and when it can backfire and become damaging and destructive. As I’ve talked more about this, some people have said, “No, Kathy, you’re wrong. Comparison is always very helpful.” Sometimes it is. Yet there are many people around us (you know who they are) who obsessively engage in comparison, and it makes them sad, sick and disengaged from life and work. Here’s a look at my personal take on  How To Stop Obsessively Comparing Yourself To Others  And Coming Up Short  (and why you need to): The most important thing to understand is that there is a huge difference in energy and outcome between seeing other people’s success and using that vision to inspire you, versus beating yourself up mercilessly because you’re not where they are. If comparison makes you feel worthless and demoralized, unable to get what you want and “deserve,” and you resent others for what they have, it’s time to stop comparing or shift your approach to it. But there are positive effects of comparison. It can generate: A feeling and belief that something greater and more rewarding is possible for you because you see it in someone else A clearer pathway to success because you have a role model who is ten steps ahead of you doing what you long to and giving you a blueprint for getting there More positive growth in you because witnessing someone else’s expansion reminds you that you have what it takes too to achieve that same outcome or accomplishment, or something greater Where comparison to others goes wrong, however, is in these ways: Obsessive comparing â€" when you just can’t stop I personally know and have worked with many people who are addicted to comparison and to feeling like a loser or a victim.   They literally spend hours of their time each week on Facebook, LinkedIn, or other social media platforms looking at what other people have created and achieved, and they feel sick and depressed afterwards. This type of comparison leads people to invest in negative, destructive beliefs such as: I don’t have good friends to experience amazing times with (like these other people) I’m not rich, beautiful, talented, educated, thin (you name it) enough to be lovable My children aren’t as successful and accomplished as they should be and as so many others are My or my kids’ disabilities or challenges are shameful I’m not as loved as so many others out there are I don’t have vacations or life experiences that are exciting My life and career are a huge disappointment and embarrassment I havent achieved anything worthwhile I’m totally alone It’s critical to remember (but so many people forget) that social media platforms like Facebook which can be very helpful and enjoyable in many ways encourage us to put out into the world only the most sanitized, flattering and praise-worthy version of our lives, not the real, raw experiences we’re having. Just ask yourself this: How many selfies have you taken (of yourself alone or with others) that actually never end up being shared? Hundreds, even thousands, I’d guess, because you censor and judge them so harshly that most never see the light of day. Only the most beautiful and flattering make it. This realization is vitally important because it’s a damaging mistake to compare the raw reality of your own life with the highly fictionalized, sanitized and “touched-up” version of another’s.  You never know what their life is about, what they’re dealing with and and the hidden battles they face  , and you never will know. Always falling short and findings yourself unworthy or “less than” When people compare then feel demoralized, it’s often stemming from a belief that you’re not good enough, and you’re always on the hunt for validation of that belief. Realize: Society trains us to compare ourselves using outer, socially-constructed measures of “success” and worthiness including: beauty, age, weight, money, social status, marital status, etc. Understand that there’s extreme pressure on us to achieve those measures, but in reality, they’re culturally-derived ideas that won’t necessarily bring you  personal joy and fulfillment, given your unique values and wants. (Take a look at this powerful, eye-opening  TED talk from Ashton Applewhite  on Ageism.) If you feel continually as if you’re “less than,” ask yourself “How old is this feeling?” I’m guessing that for most, the feeling of “not good enough” began in early childhood, reinforced by authority figures who somehow conveyed that what you did and who you were was not worthy of their unconditional love and positive regard. Thousands up thousands of people in this world have been raised by narcissists and  exposure to narcissism can bring about extremely damaging effects. It’s projected that  at least 10% of the U.S. population  has borderline personality disorder and/or narcissistic personality disorder, and from my research and study, the number who are affected by people with these disorders is vast. Those who experienced emotionally-manipulative parents often grow up never feeling good enough, and this feeling of lack of worthiness bleeds into all aspects of their lives, including their careers, businesses, families and relationships. If you are chronically unhappy with your life, comparing yourself to others isn’t going to help you. You need another approach that will inspire and motivate you to  brave up and make the changes you need  to be happier. How can you stop the negative comparing and expand your self-love and self-acceptance? Gain awareness of your thoughts Begin to gain awareness of each harsh, judgmental thought you have of yourself in comparison to others. Start to see more clearly when and how you judge yourself and how hard you are on yourself.  Every time you recognize a self-hating thought, say to yourself “There goes one of these judging thoughts.” Then release it. Change your self-hating narrative Once you’ve done that for a week, you’ll begin to see how tough you are on yourself, and it’s time to actively shift your negative thoughts. You need deep commitment and unflagging perseverance, but you can change your thoughts. When you find yourself comparing harshly, stop in your tracks and dig deeper. Try to understand what you feel you are missing, and why. Look at the story you’re telling yourself, and rewrite that story. If you need help with this, start by saying this mantra every day: “I am on the right track and on my own, unique path to building a life and career I love and am proud of. I am NOT behind. I’m exactly where I need to be, learning and growing all the time.” Remember, you’re unique, powerful, capable and worthy of charting your own empowered and joyful course.  But first you have to stop the self-recrimination, and start learning the lessons your life is trying to teach you. Why You Stay in a Career You Hate Speaking and working with people every day who are in careers or jobs they dislike intensely,  I’ve asked myself, “How did we get here?   How has it happened that so many thousands of people have become despondent, angry and disgruntled about what they do for a living?”   Clearly, there are many factors at play here, including the rise of technology â€" that makes setting boundaries around our professional lives virtually impossible.   Further, in the past 30 years, we’ve become slaves to the almighty dollar, addicted to acquiring things we can’t afford, which keeps us working long and hard just to break even.   Additionally, many people jumped into certain jobs or fields early in their careers, only to discover 10 or 20 years later that they can’t find a way out. But I believe there are even deeper reasons for this epidemic of people hating what they do each day for their living.   These reasons touch on underlying emotional, spiritual and behavioral conditions, and reveal a deep disconnection to what it means to live joyfully, authentically, and meaningfully. I know some folks will debunk this post, claiming they have absolutely no choice in the matter, and that theyre stuck doing this work.    But I  dont see life that way.   I believe we always have new choices, new paths, new solutions  available to us, if we  can simply commit to creating a better life. Based on the feedback I’ve received from hundreds of professionals here and abroad, I’ve observed the following eight core reasons why people hate their careers.   As I share these, know this â€" I’m not sitting in judgment of any of these; in fact, I’ve lived through each and every one of these conditions. 1)      You don’t know yourself The vast majority of people I see in the workplace just don’t know themselves at all.   When asked, “What’s your top priority in life and in your career?  What would you give up anything for?” or “When you’re 90 looking back, what do you want to have done, been, and left behind? “   I get blank stares and mouths hanging open.   People don’t know themselves well or deeply anymore.   Why?   Perhaps because we don’t make time in our lives to get to know ourselves â€" we’re just too over-the-top busy.   Or perhaps the process of knowing oneself deeply is intimidating and scary.   Whatever the reason â€" if you don’t know who you are, at your core, and what you stand for and care about, how can you lead a life that aligns with your needs, values, and interests? (My free Career Path Self-Assessment will help you know yourself better, if you want to.) 2)  You know yourself, but you make yourself wrong In this situation, you know yourself and what you want, but you simply make yourself wrong.   You tell yourself, “Yeah, I want to change, but I’m wrong to feel that way.”   Or “I’m lucky to have a job, so I shouldn’t rock the boat” or “I have so much â€" I should just feel blessed and not complain.”   So many people (women in particular) doubt the validity of their feelings or repress their deepest longings because they think they’re wrong to have them.   Until you can make yourself “right,” you can’t find peace or joy. 3)   You’ve lost the courage to act For many who know what they want, they’ve lost the courage to take hard action.   We’ve been seduced by some erroneous concept that life should be easy.   Where did we get that idea?   Making life change isn’t easy, but it’s so worth it, especially if you hate where you are today. It takes courage, grit, and commitment to bring about lasting change, and you can do it, but only if you decide to connect to your own internal power, courage and fortitude.
